Hub Speaker: 9th June. How Strength Keeps Ageing at Bay
Muscle strength is one of the most important factors in healthy ageing. Age-related loss of muscle mass and strength, known as sarcopenia, leads to reduced physical function and mobility.
As we age, muscles become smaller and weaker. Muscles do more than move our limbs, they stabilise joints, support balance and act as a reserve during illness or injury. As our muscle strength declines so the risk of a fall and/or a fracture increases.
Working muscles against a force is strength training. This can be lifting weights such as dumbbells, using resistance bands, or using your own body weight in exercise. Strength training will also help improve everyday abilities, such as walking speed, standing up from a chair and overall mobility.
Charlee Mitchell and exercise scientist Tahalee from Keiser Training Clinics will focus on building strength for longevity and healthy ageing at this month's talk.
