Dying With Dignity: Hub Speaker April 2025

Tuesday April 8, Penny Hacket from Dying with Dignity presented a talk to the community on Voluntary Assisted Dying

Penny Hacket presented an over of the NSW voluntary assisted dying (VAD) laws which came into effect in NSW in November 2023. 

Penny's talk included:

  • the need for VAD laws and Dying with Dignity's campaign for reform
  • the scope and elibility requirements for VAD and the application process
  • making end-of-life plans to make sure your family and healthcare providers understand and respect your wishes
  • a brief overview of advance care directives and appoint of an enduring guardian
  • the vital importance of having those difficult conversations with loved ones.
  • an account from a family who used VAD
  • a short talk from a death doula (a non-medical companion, advocate, and educator who provides emotional, spiritual, and practical support to individuals facing death and their loved ones, aiming to help them navigate the dying process with dignity and peace).
