Speaker Dec 9: Tales from North Head Sanctuary
02nd December 2025
This month's speaker, Julie Evans, will bring North Head Sanctuary in Manly to life with stories that weave together its rich military history, its role as a quarantine station, and its remarkable coastal environment.
You’ll hear about the soldiers who helped defend Sydney during World War II, as well as the early arrivals who battled smallpox, the plague and other epidemics, and now rest at the Third Quarantine Cemetery. It’s a gripping blend of history, nature and human stories—one not to miss!
Julie began her career as a secondary English and History teacher before moving into specialist support for students with learning difficulties. By 2006 she was heading the learning support department at a large independent boys’ school, where she thought she was ready to retire. Five months later, she was lured back into another school, finally retiring (for real this time!) at the end of 2019. Her timing was impeccable, sparing her from navigating the challenges of teaching through COVID.
A lifelong lover of history—especially Australian history—and a devotee of Sydney since her university days, Julie has combined these passions through her long involvement with the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust. Since 2007 she has volunteered across a range of roles, including Oral History interviewing, speaking to community groups, and guiding school groups on Cockatoo Island and at North Head.
